RICHMOND VA: (Rocktown Now) – Governor Abigail Spanberger became Virginia’s new governor Saturday and went to work just a few hours later, issuing a series of executive orders, including one that ends the requirement that Virginia law enforcement officials to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Spanberger said “Ensuring public safety in Virginia requires state and local law enforcement to be focused on their core responsibilities of investigating and deterring criminal activity, staffing jails, and community engagement,”

Spanberger also appointed 10 new members to the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors in a sweeping overhaul of the institution’s governing body. The rapid shift in leadership followed the resignations of five board members appointed by former Gov. Glenn Youngkin, all of whom stepped down Friday at Spanberger’s request
Other orders called on the education department to review and take steps to strengthen school performance, looking into the state’s economy in response to funding cuts, tariffs and federal workforce cuts.
