CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison field hockey was outshot 21-1 as the Dukes fell to No. 11 Virginia 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Turf Field.
For the Dukes (0-5), goalkeeper Lilly Sweeney tallied five saves, bringing her weekend total to 10. JMU will remain on the road to open Mid-American Conference play against Ball State on Friday, Sept. 18.
Caitlin Connell led the UVA (4-1) attack with two goals and one assist for five points. Emma Watchilla (1), Mia Abello (1), Livvy Barker (1), Catalina Quinteros (1), and Adams (1) also found the back of the net. Lauren Sloan, Connell, Watchilla, Amelie Rees, and Adams each added an assist in the win.
Nilou Lempers earned the victory, while Emma Giesting came in for the final period.
How It Happened
• Virginia opened the scoring on a penalty corner with a goal deflected from Watchilla on the left post off a shot from Sloan near the end of the opening frame.
• On a quick reset early in the second, a shot by Sydney Raguini trickled through the defense and found the back of the net, however, the goal was taken off after video review.
• With under four minutes to play in the first half, Connell followed up a shot saved by Sweeney, batting in the rebound to make it 2-0 Cavaliers.
• Puck Jansen made a stop at the goal line with her body, resulting in a penalty stroke which was converted by Abello for a 3-0 UVA advantage with 1:13 to play in the first half.
• Early in the third, Virginia took advantage of an uneven rush when Connell connected with a wide-open Barker in the circle for a near-sided score.
• An awkward ball in the circle came off Watchilla and found Quinteros, who tapped it in to make it a 5-0 game at the 13:02 mark of the fourth.
• Less than a minute later, on a penalty corner, Connell sent a shot in that ricocheted off a JMU defender and in to make it 6-0 Virginia.
• Adams took a straight shot from the top of the circle that deflected in for the final goal of the game.
