BLACKSBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison baseball fell in its penultimate midweek matchup of the season, as Virginia Tech came away with a 14-1 victory in seven innings on Tuesday evening at English Field.

The Dukes dropped to 18-25, while the Hokies improved to 23-20.

Junior Ike Schmidly led JMU at the plate by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

How It Happened
First Inning
A trio of walks loaded the bases for Virginia Tech before a single from Nick Locurto brought two runs in.

Second Inning
The Hokies plated five runs to take a 7-0 lead, using a single and a grounder to produce runs prior to Ethan Ball hitting a three-run homer.

Third Inning
JMU got on the board after sophomore Reece Moody singled, swiped his 30th stolen base of the season and then scored on Schmidly’s single.

Fourth Inning
VT added a pair of runs on a single and a sacrifice fly to take a 9-1 lead.

Fifth Inning
Two singles and a sacrifice fly scored three runs for the Hokies to increase the score to 12-1.

Sixth Inning
One error and a single allowed Virginia Tech to lead 14-1.

Game Notes
• Reece Moody became the third player in program history to steal 30 bases in a single season, joining T Riley and Rich Thompson who both did so in 1999 and 2000. He is now in sole possession of fifth place in a JMU season.
• Moody extended his reached base streak to 17 games, the longest for a Duke since Mike Mancini’s 23-game streak towards the end of the 2024 season.
• Singling in his first two at bats, Ike Schmidly strung together a streak of eight consecutive plate appearances in which he reached safely that began on Sunday’s game at ULM.

Up Next
The Dukes will begin the month of May at home, hosting Marshall for a three-game series at Veterans Memorial Park on May 1-3. First pitch for Friday’s opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
