EMU Volleyball loses at Southern Virginia in three sets

BUENA VISTA, Va. (EMU Athletics) – The EMU Volleyball team hit the road on Tuesday, heading down I-81 for a matchup against defending USA South Champion Southern Virginia.

SVU racked up 14 service aces and hit .367 as a team, en route to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-16) win over EMU.

Highlights

Set One: SVU 25, EMU 18
• SVU jumped out to a 4-2 lead to start the first set, before EMU went on a 10-7 run, taking a 12-11 lead behind three kills from Jada Parker, one apiece from Claire Reichenbach and Lindsay Bly and an Emma Rogers blocks.
• The teams swapped points to 14-14, and then EMU took a two-point lead after a service error and a kill from Logan Turchetta. Unfortunately for the Royals, the Knights would end the set on an 11-2 run, including three straight service aces to win the final three points, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set Two: SVU 25, EMU 12
• The Knights took a three-point lead to start the second set, pulling ahead 7-4, with EMU picking up kills from Kenley Smith and Turchetta.
• SVU extended their lead to 10 with a 7-0 run, before EMU started chipping away, going on a 6-3 run, highlighted by kills from Mckenzie Taylor and Kassidy Meadows, to cut SVU’s lead to seven.
• EMU would pick up two more points in the set, one off a service error and another from a Turchetta kill, but SVU would end the set on an 8-2 tilt, and take a 2-0 match lead.
Set Three: SVU 25, EMU 16
• The Royals pulled ahead 6-5 to start the third set, with Bly picking up two kills and a pair of service aces. The teams flip-flopped serves to eight apiece, before the Knights went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 lead.
• Two errors and another Bly kill cut SVU’s lead to four. Later in the set, with the Knights leading by six, 18-12, EMU scored three straight, including a kill from Meadows and an Emerson Moats ace, to pull within three, 18-15.
• SVU would go on a 5-0 run, before a Bly/Rogers block stopped the Knights tilt. But SVU would finish out the set, and the match, winning the final two points.

What’s Next
EMU will be back on the court on Saturday, when they head to Maryland for a weekend tri-match. They’ll take on host St. Mary’s of Maryland at 10:00 am before finishing the day with Regent at noon.
