Community Rallies for a Cure at Shenandoah County’s Relay For Life

Luminary bags line the field at the Relay for Life Shenandoah County event. 9/6/25 The Luminaria Ceremony is a ceremony of remembrance and hope. It is a way to honor cancer survivors or those who have lost the battle to cancer with luminaria bags or candles.

MAURERTOWN VA: (Rocktown Now) – Shenandoah County came together in a powerful show of solidarity and hope on Saturday, September 6th, as Relay For Life lit up the Shenandoah County Park from 4 to 10 PM. The event, part of a nationwide movement to support the American Cancer Society, drew families, friends, and teams from across the region to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost, and raise funds for life-saving research and patient support programs.

By the end of the evening, local teams had raised an impressive $104,579.74, with contributions still being counted. Leading the fundraising efforts was the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, whose team brought in a remarkable $31,545.00—an inspiring testament to the community’s commitment to the cause.

The park was alive with music from a live DJ, laughter from family-friendly games, and the aroma of delicious food. Prizes and activities kept attendees engaged, while emotional tributes reminded everyone of the deeper purpose behind the celebration. Survivors were honored in a moving ceremony, and luminarias glowed in remembrance of loved ones who lost their battle with cancer.

Relay For Life is more than a fundraiser—it’s a lifeline. Every dollar raised helps fund critical cancer research and supports programs like free lodging for patients traveling for treatment, transportation assistance, and access to a 24/7 Cancer Helpline. The event underscored the strength of Shenandoah County’s community spirit and its unwavering determination to fight back against cancer.

As the night came to a close, participants left with full hearts and renewed resolve, knowing that their efforts are helping pave the way toward a future without cancer.
