Bridgewater Women’s Soccer gets blanked by Shenandoah, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Shenandoah Wednesday night.

Records: Bridgewater (8-4, 2-3 ODAC), Shenandoah (4-6-3, 2-2 ODAC)

How it Happened
• The first nine minutes of the match brought little action. In the tenth minute of the match, Shenandoah got their first corner opportunity of the match. Thirty seconds later, McKenna Newcome took the first shot attempt of the match and found the back of the net.
• Shenandoah ripped another shot attempt but it was stopped by Erinn Lockard. At the 14:30 mark, Sophia Phillips took the first shot attempt for BC, but it was stopped by the SU keeper.
• In the 27th minute, Grace Minton put a shot on target, but it was saved by Shenandoah’s Morgan Musselman.
• Newcome put a shot on target in the 40th minute, but Lockard was able to make the save.
• In the final minutes of the half, Katherine King ripped a shot that was stopped by Musselman.
• In the opening minutes of the second half, Shenandoah immediately applied pressure on the Bridgewater defense. They sent two shots on target, but Lockard stopped both. Newcome sent a shot low right, and made it past Lockard to give the Hornets a security goal.
• Shenandoah let off three shot attempts before Bridgewater could muster one. Kendall Garza took the Eagles’ first shot attempt of the half at the 55:51 mark, but her shot was stopped by the SU keeper. Phillips had a shot of her own, but it was off the mark. In the 58th minute, Lyric Birkley took her first shot attempt of the match, but missed high.
• After nearly ten minutes without shot attempts, Anna Belan took a shot but missed right. Sienna Smith followed with a shot of her own in the following minutes, but missed right.
• Laura Narby, Cassandra Villafan, Phillips, and Belan each took shots in the waning minutes of the match, but to no avail.

Match Notes
• Despite the final score, Bridgewater won the shot battle, taking 13 shots compared to Shenandoah’s 11. Both teams put six shots on target. This was the first match where the Eagles lost after winning the shot battle. Coming into this match, BC was 5-0 when taking more shots than their opponent.
• This was Shenandoah’s first win against the Eagles since 2015. This was the second road loss to Shenandoah in program history.
• Sophia Phillips led the Eagles in shot attempts, taking three. Kendall Garza and Lyric Birkley had two attempts apiece.
• Erinn Lockard played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Eagles. The freshman keeper made four saves.

The Eagles face Guilford on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
