BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – Bridgewater College women’s volleyball got through Averett in straight sets Friday night at home. With the win, the Eagles extend their conference winning streak to four including four consecutive wins in straight sets.

The Basics
Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Averett (AU) 0
Records: BCE (12-4 OVR, 5-1 ODAC), AU (2-11 OVR, 0-5 ODAC)

How It Happened
• The Eagles found a way to get their offense working at a more efficient pace, getting out of trouble in the first and third set to come away with a sweep. In the first set, the Cougars made the first jump and started off hot leading with a helpful four-point scoring run making it 15-12 AU. However, BCE fixed what they needed to, charging ahead to take the lead at 18-17 off a Virginia Collins service ace. Claire Griffith then wound back and fired a kill and soon later, Gabby Atwell struck one down giving the Eagles the first set advantage with a 25-22 set score.
• In the second set, BCE marched ahead while going on a commanding five-point scoring rally to take a 10-4 lead. Agnes Alford landed a strike as well as Faith DePew shortly after working to keep the momentum on BCE’s side. Then, a massive eight-point run helped cement the set while Griffith laced three kills during that run. Alford sounded out the set with a strong strike to the Averett defense, taking a 25-14 set score.
• The Eagles struck first again to open the third set but suddenly found themselves in a deficit and with constant lead changes. BCE stayed persistent continuing to charge ahead to grasp firm control. With a six-point scoring run effort by the Cougars, the set became a charge to the very end. Collins ripped a kill followed by another DePew strike and quickly dwindled the deficit. Collins pounded powerful strikes set up by Lindsay Kelley and Maya Veselinovic to take hold of the lead at 22-21. Claire Griffith hung up the phone with a thunderous attack to get the Eagles the straight-set victory and a 25-22 final set score.

Match Notes
• The attacking duo, Virginia Collins and Claire Griffith combined for 22 kills of Bridgewater’s 45 total.
• Lindsay Kelley led the way in the assists column with 22, while Anna Black led the way in digs with 16.
• Hitting percentages stayed closely similar the whole match as Bridgewater averaged a .297 percentage and Averett .243.
