BC Women’s Soccer defeats Fighting Squirrels, 6-1

STAUNTON, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College women’s soccer team opened its season with a resounding 6-1 victory over Mary Baldwin.

How it Happened
• The Eagles struck first in the 10th minute when Cassandra Villafan found nylon, giving BC an early lead. Bridgewater continued to create opportunities, and Brianna Curro doubled the advantage in the 31st minute with a tally of her own.
• Villafan added another just before halftime, scoring her second of the match to send the Eagles into the break with a 3-0 lead.
• In the second half, Bridgewater continued to pull away. Katherine King assisted Laura Narby for a goal in the 54th minute, and Lily Hewatt connected with Hannah England in the 65th minute, pushing the score to 5-0.
• England was instrumental again in the 72nd minute, setting up Sophia Phillips for the Eagles’ sixth goal. Mary Baldwin responded with a goal from Ludwig in the 79th minute, bringing the final score to 6-1.

Match Notes
• Villafan led Bridgewater’s offense with two goals and four points, while England contributed with a goal and an assist for three points. Five different Eagles scored in the victory, with Villafan, Curro, Narby, England, and Phillips all finding the back of the net.
• Ludwig scored the single goal for MBU unassisted.
• Bridgewater found the right footing on offense, tallying 22 shots compared to MBU’s three.

Bridgewater is on the road Saturday against No. 12 Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
