NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to Mary Washington 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The Basics
Final Score: Mary Washington 2, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 0-2, Mary Washington 2-0

How It Happened
• Mary Washington opened the game on the front foot and held a healthy edge in possession, and it paid off with a shot that missed high in the opening minutes. UMW got the game’s first penalty corner and put a shot on frame, but a stop by Ashley Naukept the game scoreless. Nau and her back line held strong through the opening frame, including a stop in the final minutes of the frame to keep the game scoreless after one period.
• The opening 10 minutes of the second quarter saw neither team register a shot as they traded possession, primarily in BC’s end. UMW’s pressure was awarded with a series of penalty corners that were turned aside, including a defensive save by Mollie Best on the goal line. In the melee, the visitors were awarded a penalty stroke, and Nau got a piece of the shot as it went wide. Both sides traded possession, but the battle of Eagles went to the break tied at 0-0.
• Bridgewater opened the second half on the front foot as it had its first sustained possession in the attacking zone. Mary Washington fended off the initial rush and fired a shot, but it missed wide. BC countered and got in the offensive zone again and were awarded a penalty corner. UMW fended off the chance after a foul on BC during the chance and flipped the field once again. Madalyn Miller and the defense locked in on the UMW push that ensued as the goalie made a pair of stops and her defense blocked a shot in front of her. This time, Bridgewater flipped the field. A pass from the outside by Autumn Just got passed the defense, and Crynn Klingler buried her shot to give Bridgewater a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the night. Mary Washington mustered an attack right off the score, but a save by Miller maintained the lead heading to the fourth.
• Mary Washington settled into the attacking zone to open the fourth and stayed there for much of the period. UMW fired a trio of shots early in the frame, but none reached the target. In the closing seconds of the fourth, the visitors finally broke through. Mary Washington’s first shot was stopped on the line by Jad Buckles, but the rebound found a Mary Washington player and found the back of the net to tie the game with just two seconds left on the clock and force the contest into overtime. Just 1:47 into the extra frame, UMW ended the contest. Mackenzie Proffitt found Katie Royle, who rifled her shot to the back of the cage to end the game at a 2-1 scoreline.

Match Notes
• Klingler had BC’s lone shot in the contest, but made the most of it as her shot gave BC the early advantage.
• Royle had the game-winner on her only shot of the night. Proffitt had the game-winning helper and led UMW with eight shots.
• Nau made five saves on the five shots she faced. Miller added three saves, while Buckles and Bets each had a defensive save.
• Mary Washington won the shot battle 24-1 and totaled six penalty corners compared to just one for BC.
