HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Rockingham Harrisonburg S-P-C-A says its cat shelter has reached maximum capacity after a recent explosion in felines surrendered to their care.

Executive director Huck Nawaz says in a release that the shelter has taken in 243 cats and kittens over the last month, including 25 on Tuesday alone.

In total, 371 cats are now housed at the facility – a number that Nawaz said is “more than they can handle this time of year.”

In an effort to clear space, he says that adoption rates have been temporarily slashed in half for all animals: 25 bucks for cats over six months, 50 for kittens and 100 dollars for dog rescues.

Nawaz stresses that just because a kitten is outdoors doesn’t mean it needs to be taken to shelter.
